Yes - you all are a great collective resource. Thanks so much to all for taking the time to write in! Now I just have to figure out which way to back out the bottom bracket cup, (is it righty-loosy...drive side, & what direction for the right side?) ... will look around elsewhere in these forums for now.

Most likely, it is french threaded, which means that the fixed cup will be standard direction, i.e. lefty loosey. |

The threads on both sides of the bottom bracket on older French threaded Gitanes are right hand.
In the 1980s Gitane and most other French bike makers switched to British threads for the BB and headset. British threaded BBs have left hand threads on the right side (fixed cup side).
French and Italian bottom brackets have right hand threads on the right hand fixed cup side.
British and ISO are left handed as are Swiss metric right hand cups.
Poorly manufactured or assembled right hand threaded fixed cups can work their way loose that's why the preference was to left hand threads for the fixed cups.
I'll never understand why the world bicycle industry settled on British threads as the ISO standards for headsets, bottom brackets and freewheel mounting threads while all of the other components are metric threaded (except for a few Campy fasteners)!
Except for the US, Burma (Myanmar) and 1 small African country, the rest of the world has standardized on the ISO Metric thread system.
