Received the Interclub that was an accidental ebay purchase!... ...It doesn't have sew ups or rigida wheels but instead has gnutti hubs and samir saminox steel hoops... ...And the gold paint isnt the orange on the chart. |
Gnutti hubs came on less expensive Italian bikes. Quality similar to Normandy hubs. Parts probably impossible to find outside of Italy.
Saminox steel rims are as bad or worse than Rigida rims. There's a recycling bin looking for these wheels. Are they 27" or 700c? You might be able to eBay the hubs.
Gold was one of the more rare Gitane colors. I've only seen a handful of bike this color, probably 1972-74.
Gitane used the same catalog from 1970 to 74.

Nope, not cutting them up. Unless you all think I should use the Pelissier hubs, instead. I'm gonna repack these beauties and put them back on. 27 inch hoops. In reality, I am a buyer and not an ebay seller. I just sell twice a year to clean house. And I usually take a bath when I do. |

Steel rims make for poor stopping, especially when wet. The cure back in the day was salmon-colored Mathauser brake pads. The late Sheldon Brown was also an advocate of these. Now they are call Koolstop salmon. If your bike shop doesn't have 'em, I got mine on e-bay. |

Leather brake blocks used to be excellent for the wet, on stainless steel rims. Not ideal when dry - hard and shiny.
Stainless rims used to be the worst for stopping in the wet, particularly with rubber blocks, but excellent against corrosion.
I never found chrome rims to be as bad as stainless for their stopping effectiveness.
