Disassembled the chainring ball bearings from the opposite side... took out the ball bearing carrier and this nylon ring came out with it. There's another smaller, thinner ring in a groove also (which I left in place). I wasn't quite sure which way this larger nylon ring goes back in... it's softly beveled on one side and has a definite squared edge on the other, which I think goes up against the (loose) ball bearings... that sound right? New bearing are coming...

It's part of the old style 2 piece Campy BB dust sleeve. The short tapered end fits into the longer sleeve. They are rather a pain to install.

See if you can find an inexpensive single piece sleeve. Sugino makes them. Some people charge exorbitant for a cheap plastic part.

What are the holes in the tubes for up near the ends? Should they stay open after the painting?

Not bad for a French production bike from the early 70s.

It ain't pretty but it's functional and all of the gaps are filled with braze.

I had a 1972 Super Corsa stripped and repainted. I was impressed with the brazing on it too.

The holes are to let hot gasses out of the tubes during brazing. Same thing on the top inside of the fork blades.

If you are concerned, you can get some frame rustproofing spray and coat the insides of all of the tubes.

Finally got the frame back and applied Framesaver before reassembling... All decked out here to avoid the fumes....
[/img]

Did the bottom bracket junction first with the stays air holes taped first, sprayed and turned, and then untaped the holes to spray again...

Finally ended up with the seat tube...
[/img]

Not too messy, but you have to be careful with the stains on the white paint. Used WD-40 to wie them off right away...

Spent a good solid day putting things back together. Had to make sure the paint was cured enough before doing all the clamps, etc. Here's a shot showing most everything on... As you can see it's not completely kosher, with the bull horns and reverse brakes, but I like the bars, and I the brakes work fine. Wheels are high flange Records with Rigida Alu 13-19's, tires are just temporary Paselas until I can get something better.

Another thing I wanted to try was completely incased shift cable, rather than having to deal with the grit and friction at the bottom bracket. So I have in place, with nylon ties until I get double cable clamps, the two shift lines running back along the diagonal tube. They're Jagwire double Teflons. If it doesn't work out, I'll go back to the original.

Getting close to trying it out for a shakedown ride(s). Maybe next week...[/img]

Full Cable Housings

Full length cable housings is something that was tried for many years then abandoned back in the late 60s early 70s (except on very cheap bikes where it saved assembly time).

Reason being, dirt, mud dust and so on create very few problems on exposed derailleur cables. I've never seen one wear out from those things.

Increased friction was the reason full length cable housings were abandoned in the first place. If it were such a good idea, ALL modern bikes would have them, especially MTBs.

Here's the '71 SC back together with most of its original components:
[/img]

Some things carried over from from years of riding it:
-Brooks saddle
-Kalloy adjustable stem ( I vary the angles every now and then, but if I can get the right Cinelli, I might change that out. The Pivo went years ago with that exposed bolt head)
- Bull horn bars (I don't do the drops anymore , but then again, if I found a cinelli stem/bar combo, I might go that route for accuracy's sake)
- Adjustable seat post clamp (I could've used the plain bolt here, but I like the option of being able to move the post if I want.

Some things I put back on, but won't be there most of the time or until I get a better replacement:
- Tires (inexpensive 27" Paselas) and change out to short valve tubes
- water bottle cage (probably would upgrade)
- Mafac brake blocks
- Mafac gum hoods (I won't use them in this configuration, but would if they were used with thre road bars- still want to try making them)
- Pedals (these are just to see how the originals worked again... Wth
cleaned and new bearings and straps. I'd go back to clipless)
- Pump (ok, this is for show... I don't use it anymore)
- Gear cables - I'm going to try the casings (nylon ties at the moment) and see how they work

In all, a definitely long term project to bring back an old friend that's been on many miles. Thanks for everyone's help!

This is a shot of what it was when I started:
