Well, whoever the seller is........... good luck.
Note to any Aussie Gitane lovers/collectors: I won't be bidding on this bike . |

You're a hard man Wisey. If I put mine up, I'd like to get that and more! The more one reads about enthusiasm for Gitane water pipes (this site) the more one feels as though their "pride and joy" is worth zillions, and to each I am sure they are.
But ...

I saw that one the other day when browsing Ebay. Whilte it looks really nice, I wouldn't put that kind of coin down on the bike.
I have noticed, though, that prices are all over the place for Gitane's. Someone in Seattle has been trying to sell a 1983 Sprint with fenders and a rear rack for a month or so and is getting nowhere at $300 US. |

This auction illustrates the "problem" with vintage bikes: You can spend a lot of money on a bike that is worth 1/2 of what you spent (or less). I guess that's why they call it a hobby, and not an investment!
The funny thing about the auction noted above is that the bike isn't restored to spec: The paint job is all over the place (not literally, but "restoration"-wise). It is nice, but why invest that kind of time and money into that frame? If it had sentimental value, then sure...but otherwise, it would have been better to spend that money on a better set of pipes. |

It would have made a nice fixie....
I just finished some extended private discourse with a seller on US eBay. He was listing a "Tour de France" with no picture for an exorbitant figure.
Finally I convinced him that he had an early 70s Gitane Hosteller and he changed the listing and price.

Yes, it was used in the 2007 Tour de France by Lance Armstrong, but it had Trek stickers on it then. |

Wisey,
Do you have folks who traffic in the "The Coathanger" (the Sydney Harbour Bridge) down there like we do up here with the Brooklyn Bridge?
