Several weeks ago I snagged four vintage Gitanes in an eBay auction and have just now gotten my hands on the first two. These were local pick-up only and luckily my cousin lived only 35 miles away, even though he's 700 miles from me. All four were in excellent, barely or never-ridden condition and just needed some cleaning up. Here's the first Unknown Gitane #1. I believe this might be from the late 70s to early 80s based on the components, including:
Sugino Super Maxy cranks with drilled rings
Spidel pedals
Gipemme Sprint hubs
Mavic Module E 700c rims with Michelin Elan tires
Selle Italia Challenge Pro saddle
Brevetti ?? seatpost
Weinmann levers and 605 calipers
Huret Challenger ??? derailleurs
??? handlebars
Reynolds 531 main tubes
6-speed freewheel

This one still had the orignal warranty documents hanging on the top tube. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. |

You are right about the age. That is a circa 1979/1980 Gitane. Most likely, the model is the "Sprint". You can see from the 1978 French Catalogue that most of the components and frame material match the Sprint from that era. However, the decals are of the newer design (the "arrow" decals).
Pretty interesting find there, with the warranty and everything. |
