My '84 Gitane Sprint is Normandy Atom freehweel is wearing out - 6 spd 14-24.
My dad had given me some NOS Sachs-Maillard Aris freewhels - two 7 spd (13-28 and a 12-28 ) and two 8 spd which I may not use unless I get a longer axle.
Yesterday, I located a nice used Sachs-Maillard 7 spd 12-24 freewheel (perfect replacement for the bike) for $5.
My question regards date codes. The two NOS 7 speeds that I have show a LY 91 on the freewheel and the 8 speed ones have an LY 95. The one I bought yesterday has LY 99 on it. Are these the date codes for the freewheels? |

Aris freewheels are great.
I think that I have a 13-24. Want to trade for one of those 28Ts ?

Might just be able to do that - I have to check which one I have that I'm not using. I think it's the 12-28.
If I go 6 spd to 7 spd is the wheel going to need to be re-dished or would the spacing be about the same? |

Your rear hub/dropouts should be 126mm wide. These were developed for standard width 6 speed freewheels.
Suntour brought out their narrower Ultra series freewheels: a 6 speed Ultra FW will work on most 120mm wide 5 speed hubs and a 7 speed Ultra will work on most 126mm hubs.
ARIS freewheels came in 6 Speed regular width and 7 speed narrow width (same as Ultra) to fit 126mm hubs.
The 8 speed ARIS freewheels were made for hubs wider than 126mm. Inthose days before hub widths were standardized at 120mm, 126mm, 130mm and 135mm (MTBs), there were bastardo sized 127mm, 128mm & 129mm wide hubs!
Sometimes using one of the Ultra or narrow freewheels required filing a little off of the inside bottom of the seat stay where it meets the dropout. Otherwise the chain catches when it shifts off of the smallest sprocket.
If your Sprint uses the same dropouts your TdF, they're offset wide enough that this shouldn't be a problem.
BTW, the ARIS freewheels shift just about as well as the Shimano Hyperglide cassettes and freewheels.

I have three 24T 7 speed freewheels. a 12-24 ARIS and 2 Suntour Winner 7 Speed FWs. I'll PM you.
These are 35mm wide but have recessed backsides which make them about 33mm to 34.5mm wide on the hub.

Dimensions for a 126mm wide 6 speed hub - notice the "D" dimension:
Vitus dropouts spread the seat stays for additional chain clearance above the small cog.
