Courtesy of list contributor Peter Horn, we are going to be adding a 1990 USA catalogue to the GitaneUSA library! It includes all of the UGLY clothing, with some really nice bikes! Here is a little "teaser":

Na, it's got nothing on these:

"Hey babe, want to go up to my place and do a doobie?"

Then there's "Saturday Night Fever" with 12" wide bells (bell bottom pants with 12"+ cuffs)

"Stayin' alive, stayin alive"... Where's John Rivolta?

Disco STILL sucks! Twisted Evil

Unfortunately they're making a comeback among the fashonistas! Rolling Eyes

What's next, "stackies"? (platform shoes)

Evil or Very Mad

STEPHAN! Hurry up and post the catalog so this thread doesn't get hijacked any further (actually, it's somewhat on topic because it's discussing pop culture of the era associated with our Gitanes) Wink

It is completely out of my hands now! I send the stuff to the web guy...and I have to wait for him to put it up! I feel like we are on a raft, adrift on a river heading quickly towards a large waterfall....

Great job, Stephan! Incidentally, the dark blue/white velo, the Vitus GTI model, was the 1990 Histor-Sigma Team bike. Herman Frison won at Ghent (Ghent-Wevelgem) on April 4th, 1990, with Brian Holm in at sixth on this model. We did not get this velo in the U.S.
Bienvenue,

Peter,

A while back, when I posted an inquiry about a Gitane Team frame I acquired, I think that you suggested that it was ~ a 1992 model.

I'm still curious about it's pedigree.

eBay picture:

As I built it up:

The frame is made of Columbus EL-OS tubing which was only available fo ra few years staring in 1989.

The mystery for me is the Gitane blue color. All other Team style frames I've seen from the late 80s on where some combination of white and black with yellow trim.

I got the frame from a seller in the UK. I was in contact with him recently and he told me he got the frame from a friend who raced on it in France.
Confused

Maybe the 1990 catalog my shed some light on this frame?

Stephan,
The pleasure is all mine. After all, if you did not set up this fine site, none of this would be possible!

Chas,
As you know, things can, sometimes, get really fuzzy. According to my information from Torsten (Gitane, USA), the pro model, which I belive was the precursor to your very fine EL/OS, was the EL frame or Replica 2, equipped with Record. This was in 1991. Gitane had, apparently, abruptly switched from Reynolds to Columbus for it's high end road models at this time. The white bikes were 1989-1990 Reynolds 653 and 531C models. In addition, this EL/OS was a European model, an added factor. In the mid 1990's, Gitane-France also began to switch from Campagnolo to Shimano for its' top road models. The differentiation (from the earlier EL), plus the switch to Shimano components, might well explain the new (lighter blue) color, plus the Shimano dropouts. Indeed, the model was produced for a short time, to be supplanted by the Genius (TIG welded model). However, this is just one person's theory.
Bienvenue,
Pete H.

Chas.,
We're trying to narrow this down further. As mentioned; the 1991 road bike lineup (simplified) was: Columbus EL, Columbus SLX, Columbus Cromor. Checking several times in the interim, I blieve that the lineup remained unchanged through late 1993/early 1994. No mention was made of an EL/OS model so far, although my information was tentative. Around this time (no date noted) I jotted down the latest lineup as: EL/OS, Genius plus a carbon model (all framesets, only). Out of the blue, the new models. There were, no doubt, no US domestic catalogues available during this time. Here is where the gap comes in. French domestic catalogues for the1991-1994 timeframe would be a great help here! I do not doubt that EL/OS being available as early as 1989. However, I would bet that by 1991-95, we were no longer getting specifically US models, but, rather, French domestic models with minimal changes for the US. Taking to account that it was probably a UK model, I would still guess that it should be a 1993-1995 model, but, possibly, a 1992.
Bienvenue,
Pete H.
