I've got a spare set of Shimano clipless pedals that I thought I might try on my 1974 TdF. It's got the Stonglight cranks and I'm not sure if the threading will match up with the modern pedals. Question

Metric 14mm x 1.25 pedal threads are slightly smaller diameter than British 9/16-20 TPI threads (by about .010" or 0.25mm) but the thread pitch is very close.

First off, check to make sure that the cranks haven't already been retapped to 9/16". Lyotard aluminum 460D pedals came standard on early 1970s TdFs.

An experienced bike mechanic with a proper set of 9/16" pedal taps can easily tap out the 14mm threads on your cranks to 9/16".

Proper because the pedals taps in most shops were worn out years ago from retapping the threads in steel crank arms. There's special tapping compound for aluminum that makes the job easy!

A ham fisted hammer mechanic and/or dull taps can cause the threads to be recut "bell mouthed" or crooked and the pedal axle or axles will sit crooked in the crank arm.

I just retapped the threads in an old alloy TA crankset. Someone had forced a set of of British threaded pedals into a metric crankset... "It could happen" Rolling Eyes

Note: left hand pedals have left hand threads.

Yeah, the pedals are Lyotard aluminum, and they're original. I bought the bike new back in 1973 or 74 and have had it ever since so it's all original - except the derailler which broke and was replace @ 30 years ago. My local shop can tap out the Stonglight cranks to fit the Shimano clipless pedals, but I think I'll pass on it as I don't want to permenently alter the bike. Guess I'll just stay with the "vintage" look, both the bike and me Wink
