Saturday was the Bay Area's annual Classic Rendezvous Fausto Coppi ride. The streets were filled with the color celeste or at least a small area was.
For those of you unfamiliar with things Italian, celeste is the "sick room green" that's Bianchi's trade mark color. It's pronounced CHE-LEST-TEE.
I was out there in full fashion on my celeste 1981 Bianchi Campione del Mondo.
Afterwards we had a post ride dinner at an Italian restaurant. The guest of honor was Brett Horton of The Horton Collection fame. He brought along a bunch of famous jerseys and other items of interest for a show and tell.

So here's the Gitane connection:
Brett pulled out this moth bait wool jersey. It was an original that Jacques Anquetil wore during one of his TdF victories. It was probably 1962, 63 or 64 because he wore the yellow jersey for the whole race in 1961.
I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy...
The jersey was signed by Anquetil - but not exactly... Anquetil signed so many things that he had a rubber stamp made up with his signature.
Now here's the REAL "I'm not worthy":
These are a pair of Eddy Merckx's gloves that he wore in one of his TdF victories!
My mojo had a major boost from handling a pair of Eddy's gloves! |

To touch Eddy's gloves, I was a bit non-plused... Sort of like handling religious relics
Eddy Merckx made a visit to the Bay Area several years ago and went on a charity ride (I didn't hear of it until after the fact).
The cognoscenti in the group talked about the ride. They said that as a hefty old man, he still had it in him and even the local hotshots had trouble keeping up with "Le Cannibal"!
Here's a bit about the ride:

Way to go Chas! Brett's collection is pretty spectacular, eh? I particularly like the stopwatch used for the first TdF (and for a number of years thereafter). |

Thanks Chas,
Super items and a superb collection too.
Hopefully Eddy Merckx will return and you'll be able to join next time.
