Sorry, another question for my Gitane TDF??? I would like to replace the chain and have discovered that there are many when there use to be only several.
So, the question is what to use? Here in France there is a big choice with ScramPC 10 speed very easy to find in local stores along with CAMPAGNOLO RECORD chains, etc.. Prices seem OK
Thanks for all of your help!!

How many rear gears do you have? 5, 6, 7 or 8?
I've been using the SRAM PC830 and PC850 chains with no problems on my bikes up to 8 speed. The 9 and 10 speed chains are narrower and may not work well with your set up. |

Agreed with what was said here about the type of chain to use. 9-10 will get wedged in between your sprockets or not seat properly, with sometimes catastrophic results! |

The original chain was most likely a French made Sedis brand. In the late 70s they brought out the "Sedis Sport" busingless chain which provided a major improvement in shifting.
Sedis was absorbed into the German conglomerate (which also took over Huret, Atom/Maillard and several other French cycling manufacturers). When Sachs got into financial troubles the cycling part of the company was taken over by the American owned group of investors SRAM.
SRAM produced some chains that were similar to the old Sedis Sport, the PC48, PC58 with nickel plated side links and the PC68, all nickel plated.
These have been discontinued and replaced by the newer PC830, PC850, PC870 and PC890 chains.
If you want an original looking chain, try to find a SRAM PC48 chain.
The SRAM Px8 series were a little narrower than the old Sedis chains and were designed to work with 6. 7 & 8 speed freewheel. They worked very well with 5 speed sprockets too.
The newer PC8x0 chains work even better. |

Thanks again for help. The bike has an "original" 5 cog freewheel with a name I have never heard of "Tiger"
I will look for the Sram chains as mentioned.
