I've got a 1984 Grantour that I will be getting back on the road next week. Before and after photos to be posted to this thread soon.

But one little thing has been nagging at me. I had to find a replacement stem for it (I don't want to give the plot away, but when you see the before photo, you will understand), so I checked the 84 catalog... And there's a weird round "thing" at the stem. None of the other bikes have that.

What is that "thing"?

A reflector turned the wrong way?

A flaw in the photo?

Nothing for me to be this curious about?

As I said, pics to follow soon...

Rick

"Squeeky Pads have yee" Funny thing is it always seems to be my front set that is notorious for all the noise. As much as I try to set a "toe-in" to eliminate the chatter. Sad but the campy set on my Paramount are the most offensive---I guess it time to purchase some replacements inserts.

BUT, I hardly ever ride the Paramount these days----The Gitanes are more fun and more comfortable on the road Very Happy

Hey, we may finally see a change in the weather patterns here in Kansas. Almost 2 weeks now of generally Sunny Cool to Partly Cloudy days VS the cold-wet-foggy pattern of the past 2 months. It's still cold but the roads are clear (of snow---still lots of tire debris hazards from the winter storms) and it's more fun outdoors than on the rollers-trainer in the basement. Smile

Bells are required on bikes in some European countries. Even those with Mafac brakes. Wink

There's an apocryphal story from the pro peleton that back in the day whenever they hit a big descent someone from a French-equipped team would ride up behind a competitor, touch him up high on the hip and say "Mafac."

That was known as a signal that the rider in front was now braking for the two of them.
