Hi all
Newbie to to forum with 1 Gitane Sprint in decent shape, and one that looks identical but is a little rougher. The Sprint appears to be a 1983 US model and the other one I picked up in Norway a long time ago which I guess is a Euro model, and I'm wondering if anyone can ID it.
The euro one has mafac racer brakes, mavic tubular wheels with simplex rear derailleur/Shimano FE front derailleur. Silstar crank, Campy Gran Sport pedals with Christophe cages and avocet leather straps. Maillard hubs. Selle Turbo saddle that I put on a long time ago.
The Sprint one has none of these, weinmann brakes is about the only thing I can make out, plus its down tube is wider than the Euro one! This seat post did not fit the other one.
I thought they both were Sprints, now I'm lost as to the identity of the euro one.
I'm also looking to clear some room in the garage so both of these will be up for sale shortly and properly posted in the classifieds. Any idea what these would be worth? Pics tomorrow as I break them out of storage.

| That is a poser. Are there any other identifyers on the bike? Tubing make? It is hard to tell from the picture. Have you checked the catalogues at www.GitaneUSA.com? Because that is what I would do...armed with the parts information from that bike. I would say that it would be a 1979-1980 vintage, but that is pure speculation based on the brakeset. |

The Norge (Norwegian) bike appears to have been pieced together with good but unmatched parts based on the MAFAC Racer brakes which may have been out of production by the time this bike was produced.
But... Is it wrong, or just French!  |

| Thanks for the replies. I have dug through all the vintage catalogs and the closest I can ID the euro bike is an earlier model sprint. I think I bit off on the componentry which of course need not be entirely original. But if they're both Sprints why is the euro one a smaller tube diameter? Did they go up one schedule in size around 82-84? Anyone have an idea what these might be worth? They're for sale. |

Metric (French) Tubes:
Top Tube - 26mm
Down Tube - 28mm
Seat Tube - 28mm
Head Tube - 32mm
Steerer Tube - 25mm
Chain Stays - 22mm
Round Fork Blades - 22mm
Imperial (Inch) Tubes:
Top Tube - 1" (25.4mm)
Down Tube - 1 1/8" (28.6mm)
Seat Tube - 1 1/8" (28.6mm)
Head Tube - 1 1/4" (31.75mm)
Steerer Tube - 1" (25.4mm)
Chain Stays - 7/8" (22.2mm)
Round Fork Blades - 7/8" (22.2mm)
Seat Stays
1/2" - 13mm
9/16" - 14mm
5/8" - 16mm
Forks
There were 3 general standards for oval fork blades and they were used for both inch and metric tube sets.
Imperial (Flat) Oval 29mm x 16mm
Italian (fatter) Oval 28mm x 19mm
Reynolds NCO - New Continental Oval (Reynolds answer to Italian Oval) 27.5mm x 20mm
Allow .1mm to .2mm for paint thickness. Check the tubes side to side and top to bottom in several points along the tubes to allow for out of roundness.
Most French bikes even those with Inch size threads used metric diameter tubes. The word "most" is very critical to this discussion!
