I recently bought an older used bicycle without knowing what exactly it was. This post at bikeforums narrowed it down to a 1970's Gitane, but now I'm curious about what model it is.

I've been looking thought he catalogs but haven't found an exact match yet. The Interclubs and the various "Olympic" models look pretty close though. Maybe someone could help me narrow it down? Here's some more info on the bike.

Components: (I'm not sure what is original/replacement)

  • Derailers: Campagnolo Nuovo Record
  • Brakes: Campagnolo Super 68
  • Rims: Wolber Modele 58 Super Champion
  • Hubs: Shimano 600
  • Freewheel: Shimano
  • Crankset: Sugino Mighty Competition
  • Rear cassette?: Sun Tour
  • Stem: "SR"

Andy,
While the Honeycomb rear drop outs and long point lugs may indicate a '74-'76 upper end Gitane, the braze on shifters and braze on RD cable stop on the chain stay would indicate alterations at a later date. No chrome is also suspect. Even the Interclub had a chrome fork crown and socks. It's possible that it's a Gitane with the braze ons added and a repaint.

Jay,

I've only seen 2 other bikes besides 74-76 Gitanes with the Huret honeycomb rear dropouts: a mid 70s French made Velo-Solex and a British made Dawes from the same era.

Those dropouts weren't readily available to custom builders which makes it highly probable that it's a Gitane frame.

The top of the seat stays looks like the swage or crimp that Gitane used.

The fork didn't look quite right so I Photoshopped it to get a better look at the crown. The bend is wrong for one of the performance models and it's got a stamped fork crown like on the entry level Gitanes.

The performance models had a more "gracile" bend to the forks.

So like you say, it could be an Interclub or TdF with a replacement fork or maybe a Euro model.

Andy,

Components on a bike like yours are generally not a good indicator of the model or age. Frequently the components on mid range (non Campy) Gitanes were upgraded.

It's the frame that counts because that's what determines the ride and handling and that's why there's still a demand for old Gitanes.

I suspect that your bike has been pieced together from some decent components.

BTW, Reproduction rubber brake lever hoods are available for your Universal Model 68 brakes. They sell for around $50.
