Apparently, Gino Bartali rode these bikes in the 1948 Tour de France. They are called "Gitan", and are not related (as far as I know) to the French "Gitane" bikes, but it is interesting that we haven't stumbled upon this before (at least as far as I can remember). Here is a picture:

A quick bit of research suggests the bike might have been made or branded by the Moto Gitan manufacturer of motorbikes. Information on the brand appears to be rather sketchy.
Some info. here - http://tinyurl.com/35lv2qc and here http://tinyurl.com/3yazmxe (possibly a typo in the second sentence where the text mentions Gitane rather than Gitan).
Further research also revealed a Cyclomoteur by Gitane (Cycles Gitane) called Le Gitan - http://tinyurl.com/32uxosd
I also found info. on the Gino Bartali motorbike, apparently a brand that the rider established after his cycling career - http://tinyurl.com/32lzo4s
Interesting to see that Gitan was also a manufacturer of motorbikes as was such a common connection with many bicycle brands in the past. For example - Bianchi, Peugeot, Sunbeam, BSA, etc., and of course Gitane.
Thanks for the kick start on this one.
