Sorry...but I would imagine that some of us "euro geeks" are likely into football/soccer...so I have to start a thread here.

First of all: GREAT GAME THIS MORNING, with GERMANY beating the stuffing out of Australia! The best part was that Germany looked pretty good, for a young team. There were tons of questions, only some of which have been answered, but as a Germany fan, you couldn't ask for much more than that!

Auf gehts Deutschland!

Second, and perhaps just as important as Germany winning...THEY MUST BAN THOSE STUPID A$$ HORNS!!! I may not be able to watch any more of the world cup if they don't get rid of those things post haste!

World Cup???? Shocked

Wasn't that a half baked idea for a season long series of bike races with the ugliest leader's jersey in the history of the sport, usually won by some fortunate domestique who just happend to draw the short straw and get rostered on to more of the designated races that season then anyone else? Confused

I thought that canned the whole thing years ago? Twisted Evil

Germany played a great game. So far I have been able to watch every gamel. I can't wait to see Spain play. I agree with the vuvuzelas, I was reading an article that after spending two hours in the stadium one comes out with the ears ringing, mine are ringing now just from watchin on my tv.

OOps, Chas. Got it wrong this morning: Slovenia/Slovakia. Potato/Potahto

A Slovenian player just guaranteed a victory over the USA:

Slovenia and Slovakia were both part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire which was dissolved at the end of WW I.

The Czechoslovakian nation was founded in Pittsburgh, PA after the war by expatriots from that that area. It was made up of the ethnic regions inhabited by the Czechs, Bohemians, Moravians, and Slovakcs who all had similar languages.

Yugoslavia was established by the "Allied" Powers after WW I for the same sort of reason. Seven plus ethnic groups were thrown into one kettle because the Brits thought the "Wogs" all spoke the same language.

The British wanted to keep everything neat and not have a bunch of small countries running amuck (perhaps encouraging separatism among the Welsh, Scots and Irish).

Slovenia and parts of Croatia were part of Austria for 800 years. Serbia, Montenegro and what was to became Macedonia had been part of the Ottoman Turkish Empire for almost 500 years.

While the languages were similar the ethnic cultures were all different. Ah, Blighty!

So yes, there are similarities between Slovenia and Slovakia but they are separated by 450 km or 280 miles.

Slovenian national motto:

You can always tell a Slovenian... But you can't tell him ANYTHING! Twisted Evil

Slovenia is also the home of Atomik Harmonik. They have a video on youtube with a guy riding a bike, but it's not a Gitane, so don't waste your time looking for it.

That game was absolute bullshit. Since when do the referees think that they get to decide the game and the group??? Klose will miss the next game, which could decide it for Germany. Of course, they should have buried that penalty kick, which would have changed the entire outlook (a tie would have been a good result). But all the yellow cards??? What the heck was that all about???

Serbia did a good job of completely clogging up the middle of the field. Germany seemed to be able to adjust in the second half. But kicking out Klose is a HUGE blow.

Like I said: Bullshit.

Well, Klose will surely be hard to replace, but there are other good players and it's time for the team to show if they are fit for a big tournament.

Lots of cards, too many even, that is correct. If you stop the players and their creativity and especially their fighting spirit dead by making them fear any move they make it all goes down the drain.

But that is the way soccer goes, the guy with the whistle is always right as long as he is on the field. No sense in complaining afterwards, all you can do is buck up and see it through - or go home. And I think the German coach is the right man to tell that to his players.

Besides: Serbia really did well, no arguing about that. So Germany might also have lost under better circumstances.

We'll see if Cacau can step it up against Ghana. Still have faith that the team will rally after this setback.

What a game, eh? 91st minute! The US is a scary team. They have a lot of firepower, and I don't want the Germans to face them in the next round...assuming the Germans pull their heads out of their arses and BEAT FRIGGIN GHANA!
