I posted awhile back about a creaking type sound at the rear of my bike - Campy SR hub, 7 spd Aris freewheel, Mavic GL 330 tubular rim with a brand new Continental Sprinter tire.

The sound occurs only when there's weight on the saddle. Just pushing the bike with no rider you can't hear anything. I swapped to a different tire and had the bike shop check spoke tension and re-true the wheel.

Today I was looking closer at the rim and noticed a spot that might be a crack but I'm not too sure. If it is I could definitely see how that would cause the noise.

What do you think? It's hard to get a real clear picture of the spot on the rim.

Cracked rim. That's my opinion....

Scott,

That does look like a cracked rim. It might be an idea to put some french chalk (or similar identifier) on the tyre (across a two to three inch area) where this possible crack is, then ride the bike to see if the creak returns at the point that the chalk hits the ground on each rotation of the wheel.

You could try swapping the wheel with another to see if the replacement creaks too.

Tim
