I finally got around to going through the bottom bracket on the old Gitane I picked up for free behind the bike shop. It's a cottered spindle/axle. When I took it apart I noticed the races on the spindle were pitted quite a bit.
I thought "what the heck, let's put it back together and see what happens". Well, if I tighten up the cup correctly the spindle catches. If I loosen it up a little the spindle turns smooth but has a little play in it which I don't really like either.
I'm assuming I just need a new spindle and wonder where I might look for one. I'd really like to stay cottered since I worked so hard to clean up the Nervar cranks and the 52-36 gearing will be kind of neat with the 14-28 rear cluster.
