As your forum seems to be the most active aroung Gitane bicycles, I would like to have your feedback about this frame / fork.
please find more images under :

This frame kit as been bought with Campagnolo equipements (mounted in head tube and bottom bracket).
At the moment, with the searching I did, it seems to be a Gitane Super Pista '68. What do you think about this ?
Thank You

Good guess - late 60s to very early (1970) 70s Gitane Super Pista.
The best indicators are the brazed on willow leaf seat stay caps. Gitane only used this feature on their top end models, Super Corsa, Tour de France, Super Pista and so on.
It was the first victim of the Bike Boom era: staring about 1970 they switched to swagged tube ends instead of the time consuming brazed on caps.
The chrome plating was probably done by a former owner but it could also have been done for a show bike.
The other thing is the crudely stamped numbers in the left rear dropout. The other day a frame builder friend suggested a logical reason for the random numbers found on Gitane frames.
He said that rather than random serial numbers that they were untraceable internal order numbers which makes total sense.

Thank you so much for this confirmation
Actually, the Chrome finish was the main doubt for this model.
Once you explained me the numbers on the dropout, do you think there is a way that Micmo find the trace of the serial number ?
I'm really pleased having found kind of vintage frame. I now have to find original components and polish, polish and repolish that chrome.
Thank you |

Fred,
In the Forum we came to the conclusion that there was no logic to the numbers stamped on most Gitane frames.
When my friend suggested that they were internal Gitane order numbers rather than serial numbers, that made a lot more sense.
Unfortunately, the original Micmo organization is long gone and any records from over 40 years ago have probably disappeared too. |
