Classic shot. Nice find. Whoever took it did extremely well regards exposure and focus because it's pin sharp. I thought for a moment that it might have been staged as it's so good. Lovely photo.
I'll have a guess at the date and race - 1981 Tour de France Prologue, Nice.

1981 ought to be correct because of his number and the team name. 131 means he did not win the last TdF.
In 1982 he would have been number 1, having won in 1981, so it can't be that year.
The team name "Renault Elf Cycles Gitane" existed in 1981 and 1982 only. Before that it was named "Renault Gitane" and after "Renault Elf".
So it has to be 1981. |

I agree, it has to be 1981. I also felt it to be the case by the World Championship Jersey that he's wearing, which he won in 1980.
