After and long wait for a paint job, my new project is nearing completion. Just waiting for the gold Belleri handlebars to come in so I can mount the gold, drilled Mafac brake levers and run the brake lines.

The inspiration for this bike is the one one the cover of the 1974 French catalog found in the catalog section of this website.

Instead of Campagnolo parts I decided to go as "French" as possible.

The olny parts on this bike that are not French are the spokes, the wire cables (jackets are French), the stem (I cant find a 120+mm French stem, yet) and the leather handlebar tape that will be used. Oh and the grease Very Happy

Full specification will be posted along with better pictures as soon as it is done.

Wow. Very nice restoration. That bike is beautiful, and the parts selection is really nice. I love the gold annodized stuff.

Super restoration and I'm sure the ride will be just as wonderful as the look. Lovely machine.

Thanks for posting.

Sorry for the almost 1 month delay since I posted originally. It took 2+ weeks for the guy to ship the new handle bars, etc, etc.....

Just got back from my first ride, 22 miles and it rode great. I had never ridden on tubulars before, let alone hand made silk tubulars so the ride was smooth a can be. Just need to adjust the rear brake pads and that is about it!

Here is the final breakdown on the parts used to complete the bike.

@1975 60cm Gitane Reynolds 531 Frame and Fork (Thanks Chas)
Frame painted Medium Rich Blue Metallic by Bilenky Cycleworks, decals by Cyclomondo, clear coat over decals.
Stronglight 93 Crankset 175mm arms.
Stronglight 105 BIS Chain rings 52 / 42 - NOS
Stronglight Crain ring bolts - NOS
Stronglight Competition Bottom Bracket
Lyotard M. Berthet 23 Pedals - NOS
Christophe Toe Clips and Straps - NOS
Stonglight Competition Headset
Simplex Chrome Steel 26.6mm seatpost.
Ideale 2002 Saddle (Thanks Jay)
T.A. seat binder bolts. - NOS
Simplex Super LJ Rear Derailleur
Simplex Super LJ Front Derailleur
Simplex Super LJ Shifters
Mafac Competition Brake Calipers with new Kool Stop Pads - NOS
Mafac Drilled Brake Levers with full Black Mafac rubber Hoods. - NOS
3T Record Stem 125mm - NOS
Belleri Handlebars - NOS
Velo Orange Leather bar tape
Velox Bar Plugs
Speedway brake and shifter cable housing (NOS) with new Velo Orange inner cables.
Huret Cable Clamps - NOS
Normandy Luxe Competition Hubs - NOS
M.M. Atom Quick Releases - NOS
Mavic Monthyler Route Rims 36 hole. - NOS
D.T. swiss spokes and nipples (tied and soldered by me)
Francois Marie Boyaux Silk Tubulars 22mm
Sedis Sedi-color chain. - NOS
Malliard 14-24 5 speed freewheel. - NOS
T.A. Water bottle cage. - NOS

I think that about does it. Parts were aquired from as far away as Germany, Netherlands, France, Greece, Cypress, England and Australia and some as close as Philadelphia! The only parts that are not French are:
Spokes, nipple, stem, bar tape, decals, inner cables, brake pads, grease and air Very Happy

Please let me know if I missed anything or if anyone has any questions.

Erik

That frame has the nicest chrome I've ever seen on an old Gitane.

It should killer smooth riding. Wait to you climb a hill and then you will really appreciate sewups (read my posts about sewups for some hints).

To bad it was too big for me... Crying or Very sad

My loss, your gain! Wink

What a beautiful bike! I hesitate to comment on a small point, but your toe straps are buckled wrong. Are you able to tighten them, and to release them when you want to stop?

Here is the way to do it:http://www.yellowjersey.org/how2clip.html

Here is Hinault, you can see the toe clip only goes through the buckle once, then turns up so you can pull it tight.

I am aware of the proper routing of the strap, I did it that way for the picture. I also had a small piece of wood wedged under the pedal so it would sit upright on the drive side for the photograph! Very Happy

Well, I guess I should have figured a guy who tied and soldered his own spokes, and twisted the strap where it went through the pedal, would know how to use straps. Again, you did a great job!
