Hi gents,
For my 66' gitane, most of the parts are 1st generation campy NR, except for the brakes which are Mafac Dural Forge/Tiger. In keeping true to its origins, I'll use these brakes as it'll definitely provide for some extra brake arm-to-fender clearance.
Either way, the brake pad/posts have a retaining nut at the end and I'm wondering if there are better brake pad/post substitute that could be used instead (as the originals are shot).
I don't know if anyone has a replacement set of 4 (that are in good shape to sell) or if say Mathaeuser has some close substitute that could use/retrofit and use a inverted tapping tool in order to thread the post end. The post rides in a fixed groove that is part of the brake arm itself (unlike my compeition or racer brake sets).
Any advise/suggestions would be great.
Thnx |

Kool-Stop just started making replacement blocks for MAFAC brakes. They come in salmon or black.
I think that Jay may have tried some of these already? |
I'm using the koolstop salmon dot replacement pads for my other mafacs (and they work great), but was curious if anyone had a good set of brake mount/posts for the tiger model or if there was an aftermarket post/mount set that could be retrofitted to it, as my original ones are shot. |

Yup, they are great!!! I was fortunate to acquire some of the first available when KS introduced them.

Thank you for the links.
Ooooh ... the velo posts look like they screw-on (which would allow for a customized post to be screwed on/added) that will fit the Tiger brake-arm channel for the post to reside in and bolt against. It even has a toe-in adjustment to stop the screaming brake whine!
I love these old brakes, but the brake post/cartridges are scary and am wearing of careening down a mountainside and relying on them to work.
It'll be funky set of Mafacs for sure if install the velo-orange brake blocks ont them |

I was about to purchase the velo-orange brake pads but luckily found these at the last moment on ebay (for $18 pair). They are CNC'd bolt-on brake pads by bi-King XON. Beautifully made and I can replace the bolt with any length needed for a custom fit of these pads onto my Mafac Tiger brake calipers. The brake pads can be replaced with standard shimano, if needed.
I love some of the mafac brakes, but their brakpad/post quality was highly questionable in my book (at least with the sets that I've owned) so being able to replace them with higher quality CNC'd aluminum + threaded mounting device will let me brake with a little more confidence when careening down a hillside at 40+ mph (sometimes faster when I don't feel so brittle), which is when I don't care that I'm not using the original/vintage brake pads LOL.
Cheers,
LT
