I just acquired an early Simplex JUY 51 or earlier rear derailleur. the reason i say possibly earlier is all 51's I've seen online show the pulley wheels with chain grooves. the one I just got has flat steel pulleys. It's NOS as I don;t see any wear on the pulley wheels or that it has been mounted ever!

A simple great looking old derailleur anybody know much about them?[img][/img]

Nice find. I suspect that it's a different model or year than a Simplex JUY 51.

Here's a copy of the 1954 Simplex catalog showing a JUY 51.

http://www.disraeligears.co.uk/Site/Simplex_1954_-_catalogue_page_3.html

Your derailleur looks more like this Tour de France model.

...or this 2 speed model Tour de France.

The "claw" mounting bracket shows signs of serrations from a wheel nut. The derailleur may have been mounted on a bike but not used.

Chas;
Thanks for the observation I had to look again and yes, I did notice the seration from a previous axle nut.

After grabbing the magnifying glass I did find in very small stamp the following around the pulley bolt. BTY SGOG Does that help with anything as far as year and model? Any ideas as to when this might have been produced?

Just a great old piece that probably isn't worth all the trouble but is what keeps me so interested in the French bikes and everything related to them. Always something new to learn!
I really appreciate you and everyone's help and thank everybody for their contributions.

Could it say "BTE S.G.D.G."?

BTE S.G.D.G." is an abbreviation found on many products made in France.

"BTE" is short for "breveté" which means "patented".

"S.G.D.G." stands for "Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement" which means "without government guarantee".

In the US this would be the equivalent of "Patent Pending" which means absolutely nothing and is slightly illegal to use.

You either hold a patent or you don't! Rolling Eyes

Did you happen to check out the Disraeli Gears links in my previous message? I think that it's one or another of the Tour e France models.
