Hello every body,
I will be very thankful if you would date this beauty frame...my supposition is 1964....

Bob,

Congratulations, I watched this auction too. Very Happy

I almost pulled the trigger but I popped for another frame (not a Gitane) that I'd been lusting over for several years!

OK. what is it? My first guess is that it's a ~1964ish Gitane 102 which later became the Tour de France model.

There is a remnant of a Reynolds decal on the down tube plus there's a Durifort sticker on the fork. That was a very common blend on mid range to top quality French bikes up into the early 70s, 3 TUBES RENFORCES (3 main tubes butted Reynolds 531) with Durifort forks and stays.

There was probably a picture of Jaques Anquetil on the seat tube too!

This frame was bought from friend of mine.

I don't think it's just Gitane 102 because the lugs of the 102 are not Nervex and the fork ends are not Campagniolo, this frame looks more like De Luxe model.

If you look closely at the pictures and descriptions of the 102 and the DeLuxe models, it says that the DeLuxe has "Front and rear chrome plating and chromed saddle bar sleeve".

Click on this picture for a larger view.

"saddle bar sleeve" (meaning seat tube) is probably an interpretation from the French description using a French-English dictionary! Rolling Eyes

This was probably typed up by the person who did the "cut and paste" graphics layout for this brochure who had little or no knowledge of bicycles.

BTW, the numbers on Gitane models have noting to do with quality levels.

The 102 probably had Campagnolo dropouts too because it came with Campagnolo small flange hubs. The DeLuxe came with less expensive Normandy hubs.

The way that I interpreted the model descriptions, the 102 was a racing model and the DeLuxe was a fancier model with fenders and Campy derailleurs. Underneath the paint and chrome they were probably the same frame.

The French thought highly of Huret Allvit derailleurs and they were found on many top of the line French bikes from the 1960s!

The Allvit was the French made equivalent to the Italian Campagnolo derailleurs and they both shifted about equally poorly as compared to more modern derailleur designs.

Much of what I wrote were educated guesses! Wink

It's hard to find exact information about a bike frame that's almost 50 years old.

In addition, Gitane produced different versions and models for specific markets, for example, France, The UK, Benelux, Germany and Eastern Europe plus North America.

Why? Who knows?

It should be a very nice riding bike and it would be great to equip it with period correct components.

Here are some pictures of a 1962 Gitane Competition model that I found on the web The Competition was their top model back then. This will give you an idea of what the bike may have looked like way back in the 1960s.

Hope that this helps.

Uspeh! Сбогом и на добър час
