Hi there,

I'm new to cycling but i enjoy doing things the hard way so i purchased a gitane that needs some TLC to return it to it's former glory.

The seller said it was a 1978 model that his father rode. I've been looking around online and it doesn't look like any that i've found.

I'm working on the assumption that it's a tdf though. I would greatly appreciate any help in identifying what i've got so i restore it.

Greetings and welcome to the GitaneUSA Forum.

The bike looks like it's a 1974 or 75 Tour de France. It could be a 1976 Interclub too.

The determining factor is the headset.

Tour de France bikes came with Stronglight P3 headsets.

The P3 headset looked like this:

Or this:

The top locknut was usually round with no flats and 4 pin holes.

Interclubs used standard Gitane headsets like this with wrench flats on the lock nut:

Can you post some close up pictures of the headset and hubs.

The single chainring crankset is not original.

Thankyou for your help so far.

I guessed that the crankset wasn't original.

Here are some more photos to help narrow it down. The hubs say "normandy"

Your bike is most likely and Interclub or similar model made for the European market not a Tour de France. It's probably from 1974, 75 or 76.

The 2 features that point this out are the headset and the medium point Bocama lugs.

1974-75 Interclub

Long point Prugnat lugs on a 1974-76 Tour de France (I bought this frame from our exulted List Meister Stephan A. He had Campagnolo components on the bike not the original equipment)

Long point Bocama lugs on an odd European model that's a mix of an Interclub and a TdF.

The hubs on your bike are the standard Normandy Sport models not the Luxe Competition hubs that could have been used on a Tour de France. It looks like the front hub is stamped 10 73 which would mean that it was manufactured in October 1973.

Wheels are not a good indicator fro dating a bike or finding the model because they were frequently and easily changed. Some of the Tour de France bikes came with tubular tires so many folks had the bike shop change them to standard clincher wheels.

Also, your bike could have been purchased by your father in 1978 but was actually an older model that sat in a bike shop or a warehouse for a number of years.

Even though it's not a Tour de France it should be a very nice riding bike to be cherished because you got it from your father. That makes it special. Cool
