I'm new to the site and to the world of Gitane. I have researched my Gitane that I picked up for next to nothing a couple of weeks ago. It seems to be a 76 but cant find what model. It has mafac racer brakes, Huret derailleur with stem shifters. It seems like a bit of a mix and match. I can't see any pictures in Gitane catalogues that have the pump spikes on the underside of the top tube either.

Can anyone shed any light on what they think the model is?
I'll post some better photos when I get home in the light!

Greetings and welcome to the circus er Forum. Very Happy

The bike looks like it's a 1974 to 1976, probably a European model because the pump pegs under the top tube weren't used on Gitanes imported into the US during the 70s.

The Sugino Maxi cranks were only used for a few years too. Gitane used whatever components were available at the time. Huret derailleurs were highly respected in France.

So... if i have a Hosteller, and has pump spikes under my top tube, it was not imported to the US? 1972 model it is. If anyone can give a frame seriel # list for 70's Gitane's that would be great! Very Happy

I don't understand your question. Pump pegs were eliminated on most bike imported in to the US by the mid 70s.

Perhaps early on it was a lawyer issue because of the possibility that someone could get hurt on them, but also they fell out of fashion. Later in the 1970 CPSC (the US Consumer Protection Safety Commission) would have outlawed them anyway.

There were lots of Gitane bikes that folks brought back to the US from Europe. Many of them had different features and components than the US models imported by Mel Pinto Imports between the mid 1960s and 1974.

For well over a year we tried to make sense of Gitane serial numbers without any success. Wink

The only way to guesstimate the age is by the features and components.
