I hope the pictures will be with this post!
Hi everyone,
I am trying to find out which Gitane model and year I have. I bought the bike in early 1972 so it could be a 1972 or 1971. I have not ridden this bike in years and would like to get it restored.
From the research I have done, I would say it's a Gran Sport but there is no serial number on the left rear wheel dropout. While at the cycle shop, we found the serial number (3307) on the bottom of the bottom bracket.
All the components are original, absolutely nothing has been replaced.
MaFac brakes
Pivo Stem
Simplex derailer
The original tires, Michelin Made in France
Lyotard pedals
The photos show all the badges. There is some hand painted gold trim where the tubes meet.
The clerk at the cycle shop suggested I might be better off just buying new. Of course he was born about 20 years ago.

Thanks for the quick confirmation! I bought it 40 yrs ago to ride to work/school and now I will use it for the same reason. I plan on having the bike restored with original parts , except for the saddle, rather than stock items even if it costs a bit more. It's still a nice looking bike and deserves to be brought back to it's former beauty. Even though it was the lowest end Gitane, it's the only one I've seen in years. |
