My original front derraileur broke a while back. Can anybody recommend a good replacement? I think I could probably find the same Simplex derraileur on eBay but thought I might upgrade if anybody has a good recommendation.
Thanks |

The Simplex Prestige Delrin plastic derailleur was a cheap copy of an earlier all metal push rod front derailleur that may have worked OK in the late 50s , early 60s.
Campagnolo used that design on all metal Gran Sport derailleurs up into the early 70s.
They were an old fashioned design that sometimes worked OK when properly adjusted and well lubed.
By the mid 70s Simplex started making more standard parallelogram derailleurs based on the premium quality Super LJ.
Only 1 BIG problem, they continued to use the clamp portion that sits behind the seat tube made of Delrin plastic.
The Problem with the Delrin is that it tends to dry out and crack easily especially on a 35+ year old part.
Here's some of the early parallelogram front derailleurs. These 2 have the Delrin mechanism behind the seat tube. Pictures DLd from verlobase.com
Again, these 2 later model derailleurs had the plastic clamping mechanism behind the seat post. Pictures DLd from verlobase.com
All of these dérailleurs are OK if the plastic is in good condition with no cracks and not dried out.
Simplex started making some less expensive all metal front derailleurs. This is a model SJA102. Picture from velobase.com
Most of the later derailleurs were made with the control lever either in the front of the set tube or behind it.
Google is your friend, so is eBay. I saved you some work. Here's some Simplex front derailleurs on eBay. No relation to the sellers, yada, yada, yada...

One other thing Huret front derailleurs shift pretty well and are readily available on eBay for reasonable prices. Stay away form the flimsy Juret Jubilee derailleurs.
Feel free to ask any questions... |

I concur the SJA102 is a really nice front derailleur. I'm also using a Sachs Huret one that shifts quite nicely. |
