Hi!
Can anyone help identify the Gitane I just bought? I can't find any information about a Gitane bike with drum brakes, wondering if it's been modified.

The brakes are Sturmey Archer brand, made in the UK.
Someone from a cold, wet place probably added them. |

Yeah, Im in Norway, it's 6 degrees (C) and raining today... 
What about the rest of the bike, late 70s - early 80s? Are those Huret components any good (i'm not very familiar with road bikes, this was an impulse buy that I'm going to use just to get around)? I guess this was a low-end model. |

Greetings,
This was an entry level model. The Huret derailleurs on your bike where entry level components too.
They should work well because they have the same design as the top Huret derailleurs except there were no frills.
You should probably replace the derailleur cables and cable housings or at least disassemble them and grease the cable housings plus lubricate the derailleurs well.
You may need to replace the chain too. |
