Not really... It's an entry level lugless frame with a new paint job and 1984 decals plus good quality components.
There is a real 1983 Tour de France on eBay listed for $550 USD plus shipping. It has a lugged Super Vitus 980 frame with a forged sloping fork crown not the stamped steel crown on the bike in question.

I sent them this question and received the following answer
Hi The frame dose not look right for a Tour de France model. What is the tubing.
A: Hi when we go this bike it had: "made in france tour de france" stickers on the frame , these are no longer attainable so we went with what you see here, the colour is as close as OE as possible. thanks .you are on to this great bike, thanks<WIll.
I would hate some one to buy this thinking it is what it's not! |

Hmmmm. Rear brake calliper is mounted backwards. Why? It's not a retro 80's funny bike. Perhaps the rear cable was cut too short, so they flipped the calliper around so it would reach? Not a big problem, but you need to make sure the brake shoes have been turned around so the pads don't "eject" when you apply the rear brake. The chainring pins are also in backwards.(???) Looks like it was assembled by someone who doesn't know much about bikes. |

This style of lugless frames started appearing on the cheapest models from Gitane, Peugeot and Motobecane in the early 80s.
They were furnace brazed en masse to eliminate the cost of hand brazing each individual lug.
While I've never seen one of these frames fail, this style of brazing never made it to the better quality frames so that says something about the process...
Either the seller doesn't know what he's talking about or he's trying to pull the wool over on someone. A true case of a "silk purse out of a sow's ear!"
Put some lipstick on that pig! |

Is the seller stubborn and misinformed of fraudulent?
I've seen a number of eBay auctions where sellers listed a Gran Sport as a Tour de France because it has that as one of the Gitane victories on the seat tube decal.
Many sellers change their listings after enough people contact them about their error.
Some just don't get it!
The worst case was a seller who was convinced or tried to convince buyers that his Gran Sport was actually ridden in the Tour de France.
He had the gall to write back to his detractors... Clearly a rip off case!
In this particular bike in question, the seller may have invested a lot of money doing an upgrade before learning of his mistake and may be trying to recoup his losses?
If 2 or 3 people have contacted the seller and they haven't changed their listing then a message to eBay might be in order! |
