I have a number of frames that came with the shifters clamped above the braze-on notch but never on top of. There seems to be a center hole/divot in the milled of the braze-on, but on the backside of my huret, campy or simply shifts, where is no protrusion that would fit into the divot.
What is the appropriate mounting of the shifter-clamp as I've only seen it once where it was mounted over/around the braze-on notch.
... and does it really matter? |

It doesn't really matter if it works and the levers don't slide downward.
It sounds like maybe some ham fisted, hammer mechanic incorrectly mounted the levers! 
The "divot" in the stop is most likely where it was spot welded to the tube, a lot faster than brazing.
The band for inch size clamps are 1.125" (28.575mm) which is slightly bigger than a 28mm metric down tube but it shouldn't make that much difference. |
