Hello to all you Gitane experts,
recently i brought my favourite Gitane frame. On the bikeforums we try to identify the exact model/year? I got recomendation to try with Stephan
from GITANE USA if i remember well, so i am here.
Just Want to say thanks for this beautiful site!
Info about the frame:
reynolds 531 frame/fork with metallic blue paint.
Threading english,
Lugs are BCW,
tubes butted 21/24,
fork chromed, neck is also made of reynolds
Dropouts are vitus. ...
I hope this will help you to solve the challenge
Thank you very much in advance!
Best regards from Zagreb, Croatia!

Dobar dan, kako ste?
Dobrodošli na grupe!
My family came from Kostanjevica na Krki, a small town near Novo Mesto, Slovenija. It's located just over the mountain from Hrvatska.
Your frame is probably a 1984 European model. In 1984 Gitane switched to the "fast back" seat stay attachment.
In 1984 Gitanes made for the US market used Columbus (Team Pro), the 3 lower priced models had Super Vitus 983 tubing.
In 1985 the US Gitane Professional changed to Reynolds Competition tubing and long point lugs. They also had later style Reynolds decals.
Reynolds 21-24 tubing had a wall thickness of 0.8mm at the butted ends and 0.5mm in the middle. This was some light weight tubing. The down tube may have been heavier gage 20-23 - 0.9mm x 0.6mm.
I would use th 1984 decals on this frame.
Uživati...

The picture that of the head tube/down tube that I posted above is a 1985/86 Professional frame that I traded off for a smaller 1984 Team Pro frame.
In 1985 Gitane changed to long Prugnat lugs with windows. The 1984 models had short point lugs as on the the OPs frame.
There's not much if any difference between the 1985 and 1986 Professional models sold in the US. They were available with a Campy Victory gruppo or as a bare frame.
I have a 50cm 1985 Professional.
In the mid 80s Reynolds changed decals from this style used on the OP's bike to a newer style as shown on my 85 Professional shown below.
Finding the exact model, especially without the decals is going to be difficult.
Gitane, Peugeot, Motobecane and even Raleigh made different models for various markets: France, the Netherlands, the UK, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the US and even Canada (and maybe OZ too).
So... In my opinion, the OPs' frame is a 1984 model made for the European market. |

when are you planing to come for a visit your heritage?
Slovenia has nice cycling routes and famous ex yugoslavia
Cycling manufacture called ROG. In Yugoslavia. Every house in 70's had one.
Unfortunately they died the same as Yugoslavia did.
So i have 1984 team pro?
Doviđenja i hvala!

i dont think its a 84 team pro, ive never seen a 84 euro model with vitus drops, every one ive seen has simplex drops regardless of us ,euro models, and ive never seen one without a number peg. actually ive never seen any tp bike without a number peg from 84 to early 90's. jmho |

I agree, all i saw on the web have number peg???
I will not die if isn't TP, just would be nice and interesting to find out
what is it?
Can you recomend me what else to check regarding frame to help Us all out to maybe solve the issue??
Its very light and beautiful looking frame. I would like to make SS from it but as more i think about it more i want to restore it to original state even if i was never into blue yellow combo...
Thanks |

Paint and/or decals come and go, especially on a 25+ year old frame.
Threading and inner seat tube diameter tell more of a story. |

I came to share some new info with you all. The seller said that it was brought from Germany and it was full DA ex groupo....
I found this thread and it seems to me from everything i wrote its the exact the same kind of frame/ bike..
http://www.gitaneusa.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1743&view=next&sid=eb48b44bc802533b44af7ab121215cb3
I have ordered 1984 decals but don't know should i put 600ex arabesque or DA 7400 group? DA it seem to me as much period correct than 1978 EX...
Any thoughts suggestions are more than welcome!
Thanks guys in advance!! |
