Hi there!
I have just bought a Gitane Interclub. I'm quite happy with it and look forward to sprucing it up a little. From my research [i]I think[/i] it is a 76 or 77 model.
I'd like some advice;
[i]Would it be good to swap out the Sugino Maxy cranks and put in the Stronglight 93?[/i]
I have some Stronglight 93's and a 118mm BB to suit.
I guess my goal is to dress it up a little like a TDF.
Maybe get roid of the SR stem too. Anyways, just wanted to say that this website is fantastic and I have learnt so much from it. Cheers!

For some reason, your pictures didn't post, here they are.
The Sugino Maxi was an economy cast aluminum (melt forged euphemism) crank set.
The spider that caries the chain rings is swagged onto the cast aluminum crank arm.
Having been involved in most phases of the metal working industry for well over 30 years, IMO cast = cheap, forged = quality!
You will need to determine whether the bottom bracket is metric French thread or British thread.
Sugino usually had the thread size stamped into the BB cups:
35mm x 1mm x 68mm or 1.37 x 24 tpi x 68mm
The Stronglight 93 was a premium forged aluminum crankset.
The SR stem may or may not be metric diameter. If you bike has metric fork it needs a 22.0mm diameter stem.
There are some work arounds. Figure out what you have and get back.
BTW, the bike looks pretty original except for the stem, seat and pedals. |

I didn't know if it would be kosher to put the 93's on later model. Why do I worry so. Can I use the existing cups and change to the stronglight 118 spindle if existing Maxy spindle is a different length? (uh oh, what am I saying)
I don't pick the beast up for a couple of days so in trying to get all informed now.
Also , what was the seat post size? I'd probably want to put an alloy one in again to make it lighterish :)
Respecting that it is an Interclub, I don't want to open up a can of worms with the resto I have planned and over capitalize. A good clean up and polish, new decals, crank and seat post switch is all I have planned. Just want a nice every day machine that has a bit of cred. I think it's worth it :)
It certainly is frustrating understanding why there is so much component variation in trying to precisely identify models.
So rhe SR stem is not original? What a shame then something bette may have been swapped out. I need one of those nice pivo stem as per the interclub in the 77 catalogue! Eeeeeee :D |

Ok the bb cups read 1.37" x 24 tpi
is the bad for my 93 crank swap plan? :/
there is also an unfamiliar stamp on the bars...
