Ok, here's my baby...I highly modified it circa 1975-76 when I was 15 years old. Loved this bike, the frame geometry, the look, the ride, etc...
It has been stored indoors and out for 24 years. Now the time has come to restore or cut bait and bail.
The bike has the following parts:
Gitane InterClub frame and fork (original)
Pivo headstock
Mathauser finned brake pads
Stronglight 93 crank
rigida 13-19 rims
Dia-Compe G brakes & levers
Suntour derailers and levers
Can anyone shed some light on whether it's worth it to restore this bike or am I better off disassembling, cleaning it up and parting it out?
thanks,
bob |

It really all depends on what you mean by "worth it".
If you mean that you don't want to put any $$$ in which you won't be able to recover when you sell it...then by all means, part it out.
But it sounds like you have some sentimental attachment to the bike. If so, it is definitely "worth it" to restore. Wouldn't really take that much, honestly. New saddle, new cables/housing, new chain, new tires/tubes, maybe a new paint job (but only if you really wanted to). Some cleaning and regreasing. $200-$300? |

In my opinion, you won't get that much for those parts. Crankset is worth some money, but the Suntour parts won't fetch much at all. Again, my opinion. |

Stephan
Thanks for your note. Yes, I stopped riding road bikes in the 80s so I'm really out of touch with the whole generation of technology. I assume the new bikes are vastly superior. Kinda like comparing an old classic car to todays car. I heard the Gitane inter pub frames are popular among enthusiast and folks whom turn them into single speed delivery bikes.
So you say the strong light crank is worth something? What about the Dia-comp. brakes with mathauser finned pads?
I think I'm leaning toward parting this bike out truth be told. |

You may be able to get around $50 for the cranks. Dia compe isn't worth much...no "mojo" with today's collectors.
Modern bikes are nice. But vintage bikes have their own appeal. You may be able to make a few hundred parting it out, but not much more...and perhaps less. Just one person's opinion, of course. |
