Hello all, It's been many months since my last post. At that time my Gitane was identified as a 1975 Gypsy. Heeding the advice of the experts who said not to go crazy on an old "gaspiper" I embarked on my first attempt to fix up a bike.
I took it apart and cleaned it the best I could. Greased the bearings in the headset, put on new cables, alloy wheels, cotter pins, no paint.
The most challenging was the bottom bracket. In the end I replaced the caged bearings with loose ones and it now spins beautifully.
Put the Brooks saddle and the Royal kickstand back on (i like a kickstand. Give me a break!!!)
I did buy a velo orange bottom bracket but haven't found a vintage crankset yet.
Since the Gitane we (my son and I) have reconditioned 3 GIANT mountain bikes that were lanquishing in our basement and are now working on a friend's Mizutani Super Seraph that hasn't been ridden in 35 years.
Love the site,
Jenks
PS its been a great year for vegetables and flowers in the northeast.
