Hi - A question for the experts; there is an Interclub currently on EBay with a curiously shaped frame. The seller states that it came this way from the factory, rather than the unusual shape being due to accidental damage. Has anyone ever seen a mid 70's frame shaped like this? |

BULL PUCKY!
Don't believe everything you think!
The seller doesn't know what he/she is talking about... or they are trying to "pull the wool over someone's eyes"!
I suspect that the bike had an unfortunate encounter with a garage door or similar architectural fixture while mounted on a rooftop bike rack!
It started off life as a 1972-73 60cm Interclub. Someone did an interesting butcher job repair.
Gitane began using the 1st generation Sugino Maxi cranks on Interclubs about 1972.
The Simplex Prestige front derailleur has been replaced with a Huret Allvit FD. Also they came with MAFAC Racer brakes, not Weinmann sidepulls plus sewups not clincher wheels.
Cyclomondo sells Gitane Interclub repop decals on eBay. The foil ones he makes look very original. The decals on this bike look like repops.
In addition, if you look closely. the orange paint on the top tube, seat tube and rear triangle doesn't really match the paint on the head tube down tube and fork.

Chas is exactly right. Also, look at the "bulge" on the underside of the top tube near the head tube. That tortured bike was crushed by something. I sent an email to the seller letting him know that it was (1) not original and (2) unsafe and shouldn't be sold at all. |

Seller ended the auction after acknowledging experts opinions that it may have been a repair... |

I didn't see the eBay post. If it was cheap enough, maybe it might have been a worthy parts donor. If it was really cheap. Otherwise, may it rest in peace . . . |

Actually kind of interesting but I like bent bikes.
The guy cut off the top of the seat tube and then mitered the top tube and heated to bend (sag on top of tube from thinning and bump on bottom from compressing) then probably heat bent the rear stays together and torch welded/brazed? everything to the seat tube.
lot of work to make what is probably OK except weakened tubes and who knows what under the touched up paint.
But you know, this is how lots of things got started in the past..just hacking about to see what turns up. |
