Hi all,

I'm a newcomer to the biking world and I happened upon this mixte for $20 that I'm hoping to ID. The more I read about Gitane and the ride quality of the mixte bikes, the more curious I get about the bike I've got, even if it seems to be a bit tall for my 5'3" height. Any thoughts? Most of the parts have SunTour stamped on them.

Greetings and welcome to the Forum.

Your bike looks like a 1977 Newport.

Gitane Pacific took over importing and distributing Gitanes from Mel Pinto Imports. Those folks MISSED the boat and concentrated on entry level models at a time when the bike boom had ended and there was more of a market for better quality models.

In 1976 the introduced the made in Taiwan Gypsy Sport which was a 40 Lb. clunker. They also started having some bikes made in Japan which were better quality than the Gypsy Sports.

This was at a time when the French bike makers were trying to keep Asian made bikes out of the European market.

In 1977 Gitane Pacific fell apart and was taken over by Gitane Corp.

Chas, thanks for your insight, I was looking through the catalogs, but never would have thought the Newport seeing as it doesn't show the mixte model. I figured it wasn't high end, but looking at it closer now I should have seen the Sugino "made in Japan" stamp on the crank Razz. It'll still come in useful though Smile
