Simplex droupouts, stronglight cranks, mafac brakes and brake levers. Pivo stem haven't bothered to remove the tape to tell what the bars are. Normandy hubs laced to Mavis tubular rims with continental tires. All of the stickers are gone. Pulled everything off of the frame because I'm going fixed. I know, it's sacrelige. If any one wants the pull off parts let me know. I'm in memphis. You can pay for shipping for free parts. Yay!!!! |

Sorry about the weird angles. Took with my iPad. If anybody want pics of the wheels I can make that happen as well.

No plans other than frame saver spray and maybe touch up the large ugly spots. Already chased the bb threads, and will find the facer today. Will probably finish the facing later in the week. This is a slower project because I found a 84 schwinn at the same time I found this. The schwinn has euro bb so it's cheaper and easier to finish up.
Hey Chas. what is the Reynolds tubing on this gitane. It's French bb threads, and was confused about wether it would be all 531 (France and uk build right?) or if it is tre-tube (USA import). Kinda wondering and can't seem to find your posts about that. Also when I fly into Cali ill let you know for a coffee meetup. Maybe in sj? |

The MylarŪ foil decal era started ~1968 and ended in early 1974.
All of the European model TdFs that I've seen from the late 1960s until 1976 were only 3 tubes Reynolds 531 -3 TUBES RENFORCE.
Also on most of them the rear stays were painted not 1/2 chrome plated like the US models.
The pre-1974 bikes came with either proprietary Simplex or proprietary Huret rear dropouts (the French thought highly of Huret derailleurs).
Some of the early bikes had painted forks too!
I suspect that Mel Pinto Imports (the Gitane importer from the mid 60s through 1974) had the all Reynolds 531 frame TdFs specially made for the US market to compete against the similarly equipped Peugeot PX-10 bikes.
These bikes didn't become available until early 1969.
My mostly original 1969 TdF.
In 1974 Gitane Pacific took over distribution in the US. Those folks didn't have a clue!!!
The 1974 and 75 TdFs used the European style 3 TUBES RENFORCE frames instead of the all Reynolds 531 frames on the previous madels.
My 1974 TdF.
BTW both the BB and headset are French (metric world standard) threads. The seatpost is 26.4mm and the stem is ~22mm. Many 22.2mm (inch size) Nitto stems measure 22.1mm and will fit into most French steering tubes.
