Hello!

I have a question, I've been reading around here and it seems like you guys truly know what you are talking about, so here is my question.

Could I install Shimano clipless pedals on to my 76' TDF without altering the threading on the cranks? They are the original Stronglight cranks.

I want to be able to keep the old pedals and not alter the bike forever.

Look at the back side of the Stronglight cranks and you will see that they are probably marked M14x1.25mm or something like that.

If the pedals are original they most likely have Metric threads.

Inch (British) threads are 9/16-20. Inch size cranks are marked that way.

Metric threaded clipless pedals are probably non existent because British pedal treads had become the ISO standard by the time they were introduced in the 1980s.

A GOOD bike shop should have a GOOD set of pedal taps and tap the cranks slightly oversize to fit inch size pedals.

Yes, they are metric, i'm afraid of not being able to go back. What would you do? An alternative would be to find shoes that work well with the original caged pedals..which are also impossible to find. Maybe it is worth it since I use the bike for fitness riding and not just as a weekend cruiser. I'm torn...

Just a suggestion, I've seen stronglight cranksets on ebay with the 9/16-20 pedal threads, perhaps you could just swap out the crankset for one that will fit the pedals you wish to use.
