My pedal broke off while biking this weekend. Luckily I was only a mile or so from home and not at the peak of my tour 20 miles away!

Here are some pics: http://imgur.com/a/t3T46

I'm not very familiar with pedals and was curious to know if I needed to replace the entire thing or just the piece that anchors the pedal to the pedal shaft. What part do I need and where can I find it? Why may have this happened and what can I do to prevent this from happening in the future? If you need more information feel free to ask and thank you in advance for your help.

PS: Gitane TdF 1974

if it were me id get a different set .would be a drag to work just to find a match spindle then maybe the other side breaks. but this happens in the world of vintage gear. stephan bought a team pro frame built it up and bam down tube breaks. it cost me ALOT of $$$ to fix it and repaint. so this isn't too bad. 14mm= French thread 9/16 = english thread
oh , I really like your sig it made me chuckle.

I agree with Lofter, find some new pedals.

Those are some kind of mid price range British pedals. They most likely have 9/16-14 British threads.

TdFs originally came with similar looking Lyotard 460D alloy pedals with M14x1.25 Metric threads.

Good quality metric thread pedals haven't been produced for maybe 25 years. They're hard to find.

The crank arms were probably re-tapped oversize to fit the British thread pedals.

There are a lot of descent pedals on the market, some of them with sealed bearings.

MKS makes some including the Sylvan Touring model which looks similar to the Lyotard 460D pedals.

KKT is another brand. I don't think they are being made anymore but you can find them on eBay.

Check VeloORANGE too:

your lucky the threaded part didn't snap off right next to the crank arm, at least you can still get a wrench on it to remove it.I agree with the other gentleman, much easier just to purchase another set, I also like MKS pedals

Wow, I love this forum. Thank you for all the help all around. Based on verktyg's comment I was going to go with these peds:

http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/mks-sylvan-touring-pedals.html

I assume they will fit my pedal shaft no problemo? I just want to be sure before I drop the money. Thanks again!

A joke in compensation:

Why couldn't the bicycle stand up?
Because it was two tired..
Ba dum tss

Lofter,

The cranks will probably show 14 x 1.25.

Seeing as how it has Brit pedals, the cranks most likely have been tapped out to 9/16-14, but...

The only easy way to tell is to take a known pair of British thread pedals and see how they fit.

Metric 14mm pedals are going to measure slightly undersize across the threads, about 13.8mm to 13.9mm (14mm = .5512", 13.8mm = .5433", 13.9mm = .5472")

British treads will measure undersize too, about .5512" (9/16" = .5625").

I've been playing around with pedals myself this evening.

Using a metric dial caliper, all of the metric pedals that I measured were ~13.8mm across the threads while the British threads measured 14mm! Confused

I have a NOS Stronglight 105Bis crankset with metric threads.

I didn't want to re-tap these cranks out to 9-16-14 so I was going through all of my old pedals.

I need to use a pedal extender on my right crank and made a RH pedal extender with 14mm x 1.25 outside threads and 9/16-14 inside threads.

By chance I have a NOS set of Lyotard Berthet pedals with a 14mm LH pedal and a 9/16 RH pedal! Very Happy

If it turns out you have French threads and want to keep them, I have been running this type of pedal for some of my bikes and they are not too $
and sort of sleepers on ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=111082477691&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:VRI&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2661

This finishes in around two hours but it is on second listing and probably will not sell again. They look not too used and would clean up well.
I find that these have the axle shaft thicker longer with smoother transition
down to the outside smaller bearing race.

There is nothing wrong with the V. Orange pedals except they are made by
human slaves.
