friction lever questions

Hey All,

I posted a while back that I'm fixing up a Gitane Mixte. I've got a question about the friction levers.

When I got the bike, the levers were on the down tube, on a clamp. But it looks like the bike is set up to have the levers on the stem, because it has housing stops in all the right places. It'd be kinda nice to have them on the stem, but I'm not sure the levers the bike came with can be put on the stem, because they're not made to have housing attached.

Thoughts? Do I need to get different levers if I want them on the stem?

Thanks!

Those Suntour shift levers should work nice and smooth. Mounting the levers on the stem adds more friction to the cables and reduces ease of shifting because the cables have to go through the cable housings and the holes in the braze-on cable stops on the down tube.

My first Gitane, a 1972 Gran Sport came with Simplex stem shifters. I had so much trouble with them that the shop where I bought the bike put on Simplex down tube shifters.

The only problem after that was the plastic Simplex shift levers kept breaking! Confused

If you do decide to go for stem mount, I have a box of NOS, from Gitane Factory, Suntour stem shifters that go with the Suntour GT V rear derailleur sometimes found on this period of Gitane. Some are in good shape some a bit dirty but in box off the assembly line. PM if you are interested.
