I have now broken both the front and rear simplex derailleurs
In my infinite wisdom, I thought it would be cool to replace them with a period accurate set of Campagnolo derailleurs. So, I found an entire set in excellent condition, including down shifters!
Problem is; I discovered the Gitane dropout is not threaded, the campy rear bolt doesn't fit into the dropout, and requires a threaded screw.
Question - It appears like I can easily tap the dropout to finish the install. One other problem, the Campy rear has a small notch next to the bolt hole that may require a slight file shave to but fit the dropout and alight the holes. Has anybody ever attempted this? Advice greatly appreciated.

Simple modification:
Get a M10x1 (10mm x 1mm) tap to thread the derailleur hanger. The Campy thread is 10mm x 26 TPI but it's so close there's no problem. You can find these taps at hardware and auto parts stores.
Next, modify the dropout with a file as shown below.
You will also probably need to get a new derailleur cable guide. The existing Simplex guide uses a piece of cable housing. You need one that doesn't need the housing. Note, the replacement doesn't nee to be Campy.

Chas, Thank you so much for the info! I wasn't sure if I should cut into the dropout, the pictures makes it crystal clear.

BTW, since you already have Campy components this is just an FYI:
Many Suntour and Shimano derailleurs will fit Simplex dropouts without any modifications other than threading the hole. Same thing with Campy derailleurs after the late 80s.
Also, Simplex derailleurs made for those dropouts such as the SLJ series will fit without any modifications. |
