Hi
I would like to replace the stem on my 70's Interclub for a shorter one. The stem is not branded but the bars are GUID .
The bars have a shim in the middle which has the branding on .l. Measuring with calipers in the centre of the shim I get a reading of 26.4mm.
This doesn't seem to match any diameter for iso or french that I can find on Sheldon's website. The biggest I can see is 26mm. Ive measured it 3 times.
Can anyone shed some light on this, I dont want to buy a stem with the wrong clamp size
thanks in advance

Greetings,
26.4mm was the center diameter for Cinelli bars but they are marked with the brand name and logo.
A few other companies made 26.4mm bars up through the late 1980s.
French stems were originally made to fit 25mm bars. A few were 25.4mm (1 inch).
The current standards are 25.4mm and 26mm but there are some odd ball 25mm and 25.8mm bars being sold.
Currently manufactured stems fit 22.2mm steering tubes. They fit 25.4mm or 26mm bars.
Your bike probably takes a 22mm stem which are no longer made.
You can still find Cinelli 22mm stems that will fit your 26.4mm bars but they tend to be expensive.
You can sand a Cinelli 22.2mm stem down to 22mm but it's a lot of work.
DON'T TRY TO EXPAND A STEM TO FIT A 26.4mm BAR!!!
Here's what can happen:
FYI, most Nitto brand stems marked 22.2mm are actually 22.1mm and will sometimes fit in French steerers. They come in 25.4mm and 26mm bar sizes and Nitto makes bars in both sizes. |

Thanks Chas for the informed reply.
I ha figured I made need to sand a 22.2 stem down, unless I can find a 22 from France on ebay . Ill look for a cinelli stem , if not might be easier to get new bars as well
Thanks again |
