Hello everyone, I have an old racing bike, got it from my neighbour.
It looks like a gitane, but I'm not sure..
Over here (Holland) there are not as much gitanes, so there isn't much information about it. People over here rather have dutch bikes, like gazelle and batavus etc.
I wan't to put the right decals on it and ride it again.
Greets,

Greetings and welcome to the forum.
It looks like a European model 1971-1972 Gitane Tour de France. The frame has probably been powder coated:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powder_coating
It has proprietary style Huret rear dropouts which require any early 70s Huret rear derailleur or a later style Simplex, Campagnolo or Japanese make derailleur and maybe some light modification.
The headset is probably a Stronglight P3 model.
Only the 3 main frame tubes are Reynolds 531 tubing.
You can get Gitane foil decal reproductions from Cyclomondo on eBay. They cost about $45.00 USD.
Suggestion: the most important components are on the the right side of the bike - the drive side. Many people post pictures of their bikes showing the left side. Pictures of the other side can help us see what drive components the bike has.
I don't know whether this is due to "mechanical modesty" - displaying the most intimate details of a bike's anatomy or, aesthetics - showing the dirty, greasy, messy gears.
I've come up with "modesty clothing" for bikes (like some people put on their dogs):
The fashionable "bicycle modesty skirt"
...and for extreme modesty, "the bicycle burqa"
BTW, looks like the bike may have early 1980s Shimano derailleurs but that's just a guess without seeing the other side. |

Thanks! I will make some more pictures of it.
Its a shimano rear derailleur and an campagnolo front. The head set has the letters "marque deposee" with a little logo between the words. A kind of"w".?
Thanks again for your reply, Now I know that it is worth the effort of refurbishing the bike.
Greetings from Holland. |
