The missus wanted a new bike (ain't I lucky since now I can look for parts and she can't complain about it), and this 48cm Gitane came across. Since I had already some suitable French parts around I thought why not.
But now I would like to get some identification for the frame. There is no indication of tubing on it. So any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum
The decals indicate that it's around a 1984 model. The lugless frame plus stamped vs. forged dropout indicate that it's a lower price range model but above an entry level bike.
It's probably made of straight gage carbon steel tubing.
On a frame that small butted alloy steel tubing would only be at most a lb. lighter.
Also, a smaller, lighter weight person will generally not feel much difference in ride quality between that frame and one made of the lightest tubing.
The biggest benefit will come from some nice lightweight wheels. They rest of the components don't matter than much. |
