I'm sorry if this is a duplicate post. It will either be my first post or second...depending.
I just picked up what I think is a 1971 Super Corsa. Every photo and source I've found leads me in that direction. Although it was painted black about 25 years ago, the brakes upgraded (?) to Shimano 600 and an ugly ergo handlebar added it's in awesome condition. The bottom bracket was upgraded to a Phil Wood set. That's a real upgrade I think.
The original Brooks saddle is near perfect, Campagnolo rear dropouts, Simplex fork dropouts, Campy Neuvo Record derailleurs, Stronglight cranks and headset and Rigida rims.
Since I believe the original color was white I'm going to have it stripped and powdercoated a pearl white with a gold pinstripe at the lugs.
The Brooks saddle will stay of course as will the derailleurs.
I'll be replacing the brakes with Campy and the stem and handlebars with something vintage.
The original Rigida rims stay but the Sunshine hubs will be switched out with something nice.
I'm thinking leather wraps to match the saddle but don't know a source yet.
I'm not sure on badging yet. I'm thinking just the headset decal along with the Reynolds 531 and Prugnat decals on the seat tube.
Spring can't come soon enough.

Greetings,
The bike is a 1969 to 1971 Tour de France with Campy rea dropouts not Simplex as would be spec'd.
The main difference in your situation is the Stronglight P3 headset. Super Corsas had a longer steering tube to fit a Campy headset.

The original purchaser says Super Corsa. Literature says the two models had parts interchanged when built. The TdF had Simplex dropouts this has Campy. Photos of 71 Super Corsas look right. I haven't gotten a definitive on either.

lots of info here.
Either way I think it's a great find and will be an awesome bike in a few weeks. |

Nice TdeF Jerry, Welcome to Gitane USA. You'll find lots of help and knowledge within the members. These bikes are really nice riding frame geometry.
Pearl White is cool. Although the '70 catalog show a black finish color option--this finish color scheme is much much rarer than elusive "Giant Squid" ---gets me thinking about black squid ink---I think your black frame color is cool also.
The best thing is to enjoy the re-furbish project --cleaning and elbow grease makes for a nice reward. Make sure you have the correct crank-arm tool if you plan to remove the Stronglight cranks arms. Otherwise most of the dis-assembly & assembly can proceed with standard and metric tools
Be sure to post images !!

It's been disassembled, thanks to some borrowed tools to deal with the threading on the bottom bracket.
Unless I have some revelation I'll be sending it off for a three part pearl white paint job. Gold pin stripes at the lugs to set off the curves of the Prugnat lugs. Headset will be replaced with a Campy unit. I'm having the original Super Champion Gentleman wheels rebuilt with Campy hubs and looking for Campy brakes. |

G' evening Jerry
Is your steering tube long enough to fit the taller (I think its 41mm for the Campy headset) stack height of the Campy item. Vs the shorter stack height of the Stronglight headset ???

Super Corsa steerers were 8+ mm longer than TdFs to fit a Campagnolo headset.
Here's an example of a Campy headset used on a steerer that's too short. Only one or two threads on the top lock nut are engaged on the steerer.
Ideally, ALL of the threads in the top lock nut should be fully engaged. This headset will keep coming loose until the top threads are bunged up.
One last difference, TdFs had Simplex or occasionally Huret forks ends, almost never Campy.
Super Corsas had campy fork ends and occasionally Huret but NEVER Simplex. |
