Hello

New to this forum and wanted to seek some information regarding a Gitane that I recently purchased from a Salvation Army. The bike was overall in good shape minus shifters. The components that I am aware of are the 27 in steel Samir Saminox rims with high flange Normandy hubs. Sugino Mighty competition cranks with KKT pedals. Suntour VGT rear derailleur and Suntour front derailleur. The forks are chrome. I am looking to bring this back to life and use it as a distance bike. Looking for info on its year of make and any other info. I have included some pictures. Thanks.

It's a 1974 Gran Sport De Luxe. These are pages from the 1975 catalog:

The head tube decals are about the only difference between the 1974 & 75 models.

The Sugino cranks were added later, same thing with the DiaCompe brake levers with cable adjusters and the Avocet saddle.

The first thing that I would recommend changing besides modern cables with lined cable housings, is the steel rims.

Chrome plated rims don't even slow down when wet. Get the wheels rebuilt with alloy rims and new stainless spokes.

Alloy rims will take about 2+ pounds off of the bike and make it ride and handle much better.

Panaracer Pasela tires come in 27" x 1 1/4" and the Tourgard versions have a puncture resisting strip under the tread.

Thank you very much with the information. I had thought it was from the 80s. Pleasantly surprised it is older. I am going to begin the tear down and get her in running order. Thank you I will post more pictures once I get it going. Thanks again.
