Hi,
I'm trying to fix up my girlfriend's old gitane on the cheap and get in in running order. It's pretty beat up and it's not something we want to invest too much money into now... just getting it running smoothly. Iv'e done a bunch to it so far, but I'm having a difficult itme figuring out what to do with the steel rim in the back that is way bent out of shape. The bike shop said it was too bent to repair. So the question is, what is the best way to go about replacing it. Find a newer 27" wheel and freewheel? Or should I try saving this freewheel since it isn't worn out? Would there be a threading issue if I put that on a newer wheel? The rear spacing is 125mm. The bike right now is rideable even with the back wheel bent, it's more just an annoyance... especially when braking. A lot of this is new to me! I appreciate any feedback. |

Look for a complete used bike with good wheels at some charity like the Salvation Army.
You can probably get one for ~$25.00 and you'll have extra parts left over... |

Donor bikes are a great source for entry level replacement parts.
Strip the parts off of it, list it on FleaBay or Craigslist as a "Fixie Frame" and you can get $150 to $200 bucks for it!

Not sure where you are at but Craigslist is probably the best option. I just bought a Rigida 700c wheelset with Normandy Luxe Competition hubs for a ridiculous $5. Granted it was a small town but the deals are there. I see older 27" wheels listed regularly on the Seattle Craigslist for $50 and less. Then it's a matter of repacking the bearings with fresh grease and making sure they are true. |
