Hello
My name is Philipp, and even though I live in France, I'm mainly collection italian bikes.
I do have a couple of French bikes (Lejeune and gitans) and this 1975 Gitan Super Olympic (the french version of the american Super Corsa, as I learned here).
I bought this bike from its first and only owner and it is in very nice original conditions with few signs of use.
It comes with the original Nuovo Record Group (pat. 75), 3TTT Stem and bar, "Super Champion competition - arc en ciel" rims on high flange record hubs and even the bar tape is original.
I found this forum always very helpfull, so (and because this is my first post here) thanks to those who run it for their precious work!
thank you and cheers from Paris
Philipp

Nice bike and great pictures.
It's a "Super Olympic" model with Campagnolo brakes.
The Olympic models were the same bike except they had MAFAC Competition brakes. |

One other thing, the frame is most likely made of a lighter gage (thinner wall thickness) Reynolds 531 tubing than was used on the standard production bikes.
Most French Reynolds 531 production models used 1.0mm x 0.7mm wall thickness tubing on the 3 main tubes.
This frame may have 0.7mm x 0.5mm seat and top tubes with a 0.9 x 0.6mm down tube.
If it has a 26.6mm seatpost then it's definitely made with the lighter tubing - but just because the seatpost is 26.4mm doesn't mean that it's not. |

Interesting! It is 26.4 though... don't know if there is any other way of checking the wall thikness...
thanks for your insight!
cheers

If the seat lug clamp looks like this then the seatpost should be a 26.6mm. Notice how the "ears" of the lug are almost touching and the split is distorted.
Tightening the lug too much so that it will fit a seatpost that's too small can result in a cracked lug.
If this is the situation, the lug needs to be rounded and reamed to the proper size.
Without the proper tools and someone who knows what to do the job, I'd leave it alone. |

Hello Chas,
I think there was a misunderstanding, the seatpost of my gitane has the right diameter, it's the original one. I just wanted to know weather there is another way to find out which tubes have been used, as you said, in some cases there were some thinner ones used.
but thank you for your explanation!

Other than scraping the paint to look for the sizes stamped into the Reynolds 531 tubing, the seatpost size in one way to try to figure out what wall thickness tubes were used.
Reynolds 531 stamped into tubes:
Tubing wall thickness stamped into tubes:
Reynolds used BWG Numbers - British Wire Gage for wire, sheet metal and tubing.
The 20/23 numbers = 0.89mm x 0.64mm which is rounded off to .9mm x .6mm wall thickness.
1.0mm x 0.7mm was the most common Reynolds 531 tube set used on French production frames.
These used 26.4mm seatposts.
0.9mm x 0.6mm seat tubes should use 26.6mm seatposts but frequently had 26.4mm seatposts.
That's why I suggested checking out the seatpost to determine the tubing wall thickness. |

now I understand! As I have the 26.4 seat post without the seat tube beeing squeezed, I guess this frame has the 1.00 x 0.7 tube set.
Thank you so much for your help!
