Found this wonderful looking bike on the Velospace website.

But is this a Pro? A closer look at the frame (the lugs), the chromed cable clamps and no bidon mount make me doubt that.

Greetings,
During the 70s and 80s Gitane and the other large bike makers (Peugeot, Motobecane and Raleigh) made models for specific markets like France, the UK, Netherlands, the US, the East Bloc and so on.
This bike has the Campy components that a Pro would have but the tubing sticker looks like it's only the 3 main tubes are Reynolds 531.
Here's a 1977 Olympic Record which would have been the equivalent to a Pro
All Reynolds 531 sticker:
Notice how nicely the seat stay caps are finished versus the bike being discussed.
This is is a 1979 Gitane Team bike with all French components.
So, it could be a Gitane Pro made for the Dutch market. |

Looking at the '78 brochure it could be a Trophée de France 1848, the 3 main tubes Reynolds/Campy version.
I really, really like the '78 line. Last summer an original Olympic Record in Gitane blue suddenly appeared on Ebay. Straight from France. In spite the frame was too low for me (54 cm) I bought the bike. In the meantime I'm searching for an original 60 cm frame... |
