the owner of the local bike shop neer mi house (montreal canada) just gave me a gitane frame (he knows im a big fan) whitch i think is a grand sport but what trouble me is that it has made in canada decals did any of you com across one before ? i know they did some peugeot in st george de beauce quebec canada would it be possible this one commes from there to ? any info would be apreciated tks

Wow,
I've never seen a Canadian made Gitane.
It looks like an early 70s Grand Sport. They were entry level bikes but it should ride nicely. |

Well, and this is just a guess from a guy with dual American/Canadian citizenship, is that it was a tariff thing. Ship the completed frame with parts unassembled from France, build the bike in Canada; Viola! A Canadian Gitane. It's not a bike until it's done. Only a theory.

Probably a good guess.
Gitane West was bringing in some bare painted frames and assembling them in Southern California for a few years during the mid 1970s. We bought the last of those bare frames when Gitane Pacific went under in 1977.
I think that Trek may have been doing some of that too in the early 80s when they had a relationship with Gitane. |

So cool! Didn't even know they built them there. I knew that some of the models available in the USA during the mid 1970s were badged Gitane but made in Japan...but these I have never seen before! |
